Clear zone considerations in road maintenance and belt management

Accident statistics show that crashes and rollovers are among the main types of traffic accidents, involving a high percentage of fatalities and injuries. According to CONASET 2023 statistics, the road network in the Maule Region is not immune to this trend. The road infrastructure can contribute to the reduction of traffic accidents involving off-road accidents by highlighting the concept of the clear zone, which is defined as the area parallel to the axis of the roadway, from the edge of the roadway outwards, where, in the event of losing control of the vehicle, the driver can return it to the road or stop without the risk of suffering significant damage. The Projects Department of the D.V. Maule Region has worked on a series of recommendations for the implementation of Clear Zones, considering the correct use and location of certain elements of the road infrastructure. These considerations are possible to adopt especially in the geometric design to achieve safer routes. These recommendations consider that this lateral zone should have a traversable and recoverable slope, without the presence of hard points or impassable zones, among which we can mention ditches, trenches and sills, among others. In conclusion, the cleared zone should be free of hard points and certainly of impassable points, so this work presents some problems observed in the Maule Region and proposes solutions focused on having safer roads.
