Abstract

Asphalt emulsions are an excellent ecological alternative in the construction of flexible pavements. Since asphalt is dispersed in water in the form of small globules ranging in size from 4 to 10 microns, it exhibits very low viscosity at room temperature compared to unemulsified asphalt. This allows us to mix it with aggregates at room temperature, leading to significant energy savings by eliminating the need to heat these aggregates. If the energy used for heating comes from the combustion of organic compounds, then large amounts of carbon dioxide, the primary gas contributing to global warming, are prevented from being released into the atmosphere. The main application of asphalt emulsions is in Chip Seal applications, and there is a need for significant innovation to strengthen this technology, motivating researchers and constructors to use emulsions in more applications. Therefore, this study proposes a new method to prevent asphalt residue from migrating to the surface (exudation) solely due to high pavement temperatures, rather than the emulsion dosage, by determining the flow energy. Additionally, another new method is proposed to prevent the asphalt residue from becoming brittle at low temperatures by determining the flexibility index and fracture energy.
