Abstract

During recent years, Chile has implemented a commercial opening to the rest of the world through an agenda of Physical Infrastructure and Border Facilitation agreements with its neighboring countries: Peru, Bolivia, and Argentina. This aims at improving border routes and their regional projection towards the Asia-Pacific.
This initiative is part of the objectives to enhance border connectivity through regional transport circuits, which yield medium and long-term benefits, encompassing economic, social, tourist, cultural, and environmental aspects. The implementation of this agenda with Argentina has been defined through the Chilean-Argentine Joint Technical Group, allowing progress in the paving of the 27 prioritized crossings. For Chile's bilateral relations with Peru and Bolivia, equivalent agreements have been made to improve international roads leading to the agreed border crossings between these countries. Other achieved results include agreements on the Chile-Bolivia-Brazil Bi-oceanic Corridors, the Capricorn Road Corridor (Chile-Argentina-Paraguay-Brazil), and the Chile-Mercosur Corridor. Finally, it's crucial to consider the geographical location and conditions of the border crossings, from high mountain areas in the north to extreme zones in the south, as determinant factors for the design, construction, and especially conservation and operation of border roads.
