Abstract

Elastic properties depend on the type of material, and these properties provide information about the strength of the material and its quality. Non-destructive tests, such as ultrasonic pulse velocity determination, are used as good approximations of the elastic properties of materials. In the ultrasonic pulse velocity test, the primary (Vp) and shear wave (Vs) velocities are determined, from which it is possible to determine the elastic parameters of the material provided that the density is known and the isotropic material hypothesis is valid. This work aims to study the relationship between the results obtained in pulse velocity tests and the results of destructive tests, such as the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) test, performed on chemically stabilized soft soil samples reinforced with fibers. Tests were analyzed under monotonic and cyclic loading (using a frequency of 0.5 Hz, 5000 cycles, an amplitude of ±10 % of its maximum stress level at an applied stress level of 50 % of its unconfined compressive strength under monotonic loading). From the results it can be concluded that the use of nondestructive testing is useful to determine Vp and Vs, the values are similar, ensuring the homogeneity of the samples which reflects a good reproducibility of the experimental laboratory sample preparation procedure.
