Otomies and their language in texts of religious of the XIX century

Abstract

This article analyzes the perception about the Otomies and their language in two religious texts and one philological written during the first half of the 19th century. In the works, information units were sought about the appreciation of the language and their speakers. The judgments expressed by the authors show the continuity of the representations that from early colonial times were built around this people. Therefore, it is considered that the Otomies and their language were classified and categorized negatively from a Eurocentric perspective, based on the scientific methods in force at the time.
